Where To Buy Corkscrewed: Adventures in the New French Wine Country (At Table)

Thanks to Robert Camuto for finding grace, beauty and soul in the defiant French people who populate his book. I am so disillusioned, generally, with the state of wines, vintners and marketers because they are so cookie cutter. Camuto has restored this Canuck gal's faith that integrity in and fidelity to an artisan vision in wine production still exists.

Shop For Complete Book of Mixed Drinks, The (Revised Edition): More Than 1,000 Alcoholic and Nonalcoholic Cocktails

This was my first drink-mixing book that I bought and I am happy I did! I love the layout of the book! You can search recipes by what alcohol you have laying around or you can search by type of drink. I love that it tells you the history of the liquors, terms, what glasses to use for what etc. It really is handy for a first-time drink maker! The only thing I wish it would have are drink illustrations/pictures, but that's just my taste! Thank you!Get more detail about Complete Book of Mixed Drinks, The (Revised Edition): More Than 1,000 Alcoholic and Nonalcoholic Cocktails.

Smoothies: 50 Recipes for High-Energy Refreshment Review

This was not at all what I was looking for. Too many exotic, and hard to find ingredients to be of much use. This is for foodies and professional chefs IMHO, and all others should be wary of (and probably choose to pass on) this book! If you're not Bobby Flay and you're reading this comment, then this book of recipes for smoothies is probably not designed for you!Get more detail about Smoothies: 50 Recipes for High-Energy Refreshment.

California Directory of Fine Wineries Top Quality

In this new Third Edition of The California Directory of Fine Wineries, there is both plenty to enjoy, and to nitpick about. It is a very well produced hardcover guide to wineries in the Napa, Sonoma, and Mendocino counties, with helpful maps, information on the wineries profiled, and some excellent photography from Robert Holmes. For oenophiles interested in touring Napa and Sonoma, this could be the only guide you need. Olmstead has picked an interesting selection of both major wineries (Beaulieu Vineyard--1.5 million cases annually) and minors (Cardinale Estate--700-900 cases annually), but with any limited selection like this (only 61 wineries profiled) the question is just what the selection criteria consisted of for inclusion.

There are 35 Napa wineries, 21 Sonoma, and five from Mendocino profiled. It probably would have been better to skip the shout-out to Mendocino and just include a couple more from Sonoma, and, if you were doing this as a series, include Mendocino in a directory with wineries from Lake, Humbolt and Trinity counties. But that is the nitpicking part of the review. This is an excellent volume when you consider it as a personal "Top Ten" style list. None of the wineries selected will probably disappoint, and the maps included for each county have many more wineries on them (not like it isn't hard to just drive up highway 29 looking for signs). This is an excellently packaged book, the photography is excellent, and the information on location, tastings and tours (hours and costs) and special notes about each winery will make a visit to Napa or Sonoma easy and fun to plan. While not a must have, it is an excellent book for the price.Get more detail about California Directory of Fine Wineries.

Rogov's Guide to Kosher Wines 2010 Get it now!

I bought this book by accident - I went on Amazon to buy a few copies of the new 2010 Rogov Guide to Israeli Wines, and picked this one without noticing. When it arrived, I was surprised how thin the guide was, compared to previous years' editions and then realized that this was the KOSHER wine guide, not the ISRAELI wine guide! I promptly went back to Amazon and ordered the Israeli one. Meanwhile, since I do drink kosher wine, this guide was a nice surprise. After years of reading Rogov's reviews, I've found his guidance to be really helpful. So it's nice to have this collection of reviews all in one place, in a handly little book that you can take to the wine store with you. (It's especially useful to have a tip on what wines are worth splurging on, given the generally inflated price of kosher wines.) Given the preponderance of kosher wines from Israel, the Israeli wines take up a good deal of the book. (So there's going to be some overlap, if you already have his Israeli wine guide.) But there are also recommendations for wines from the US, France, Italy, Spain, Australia, and other wine-making countries.

Unlike Rogov's Israel wine guide, which aims at covering just about EVERY Israeli wine and vintage thereof (kosher and nonkosher), this smaller book just covers his guidance on the 500 best kosher wines. When you see an Israeli wine on the shelf at your local wine store, chances are you will find it in the Israeli wine guide. But when you see a Kosher wine (Israeli or otherwise), it isn't necessarily going to be rated in this book - only if it's one of his favorites. This limitation is the reason that I only gave this book 4 stars, not 5. When I don't find a particular wine in the book, I don't really know if it's because the wine isn't one of his "best" rated ones, or whether he just hasn't reviewed it. For instance, one of my favorite kosher wines (the absolutely BEST wine to drink with spicy Indian food) is the Clos de Nouys Vouvray, which isn't in this book. Of course, when it comes down to it, you have to go by your own taste. But I'm hoping that future editions of this book are a bit more expansive.

I strongly recommend this book, plus a nice corkscrew, and a few top-rated bottles as a wedding gift for a Jewish couple.Get more detail about Rogov's Guide to Kosher Wines 2010.

Save When Wine Tastes Best 2010: A Biodynamic Calendar for Wine Drinkers

If you spend any time around winemakers in France these days you will hear about biodynamic farming. You will also hear about fruit, flower, root and leaf days and what you should and should not do in the cellar and in the vineyard on which days. The biodynamists claim that wines show at their best on fruit and flower days, and not so well on root and leaf days.

So what does it all mean? This little book (all of 48 pages, in 4 inch by 6 inch format) will give you a quick explanation of the biodynamic calendar and month by month charts showing the fruit, flower, leaf and root days from December 1, 2009 to the end of December 2010. Does the position of the moon, planets and constellations in the sky really affect the wine you bring up from your cellar (or grab off a retail shelf) for dinner this evening? Difficult to know for certain, but with this calendar in hand, you can begin to experiment for yourself. And you might just hold off on opening that bottle of '61 Latour or '78 La Tache until the next fruit day rolls around. I purchased two copies of this book, both for Christmas presents, and I loved it so much that I wanted to keep one for myself! A great buy!Get more detail about 101 Martinis.
