I bought this book by accident - I went on Amazon to buy a few copies of the new 2010 Rogov Guide to Israeli Wines, and picked this one without noticing. When it arrived, I was surprised how thin the guide was, compared to previous years' editions and then realized that this was the KOSHER wine guide, not the ISRAELI wine guide! I promptly went back to Amazon and ordered the Israeli one. Meanwhile, since I do drink kosher wine, this guide was a nice surprise. After years of reading Rogov's reviews, I've found his guidance to be really helpful. So it's nice to have this collection of reviews all in one place, in a handly little book that you can take to the wine store with you. (It's especially useful to have a tip on what wines are worth splurging on, given the generally inflated price of kosher wines.) Given the preponderance of kosher wines from Israel, the Israeli wines take up a good deal of the book. (So there's going to be some overlap, if you already have his Israeli wine guide.) But there are also recommendations for wines from the US, France, Italy, Spain, Australia, and other wine-making countries.
Unlike Rogov's Israel wine guide, which aims at covering just about EVERY Israeli wine and vintage thereof (kosher and nonkosher), this smaller book just covers his guidance on the 500 best kosher wines. When you see an Israeli wine on the shelf at your local wine store, chances are you will find it in the Israeli wine guide. But when you see a Kosher wine (Israeli or otherwise), it isn't necessarily going to be rated in this book - only if it's one of his favorites. This limitation is the reason that I only gave this book 4 stars, not 5. When I don't find a particular wine in the book, I don't really know if it's because the wine isn't one of his "best" rated ones, or whether he just hasn't reviewed it. For instance, one of my favorite kosher wines (the absolutely BEST wine to drink with spicy Indian food) is the Clos de Nouys Vouvray, which isn't in this book. Of course, when it comes down to it, you have to go by your own taste. But I'm hoping that future editions of this book are a bit more expansive.
I strongly recommend this book, plus a nice corkscrew, and a few top-rated bottles as a wedding gift for a Jewish couple.Get more detail about
