"Oldman's guide to outsmarting wine" is one of the better "novice" guides to understanding wine. I put "novice" in quotes because this book is great for novices, yet would also be informative for intermediate level wine fanatics. Everything from pronunciation (so you don't sound like a jerk when you are expressing your new knowledge!), to detailed notes on wine regions.
Given the complexity of the topic, I don't believe you could write a much better intro guide to wine. I've read it cover-to-cover and now use it as a reference guide due to it's accessible organized layout.
Paired with Windows of the World by Kevin Zraly, you will be armed with more wine knowledge than most (non-wine-industry) people need (or want!) to know.....Get more detail about Oldman's Guide to Outsmarting Wine: 108 Ingenious Shortcuts to Navigate the World of Wine with Confidence and Style.
