I bought this as a present for my husband, and he was very pleased. We don't drink sake at home often, but we never knew what to buy at the liquor store. (We're in PA, a state store system, so there's usually not much variety.) This book has helped us understand labels MUCH better. Now, even if one of the listed sakes is not available, we can more confidently choose something. We've found we are enjoying our selections much more!Get more detail about Sake A Modern Guide.

Lots of good recipes here. I lived in Chile for a couple of years, in the Valparaiso/Vina del Mar area, and I recognize several favorites. But where are the pictures? Discount Bar La Florida Cocktails 1935 Reprint
Bar La Florida in 1935. Daiquiris and Ernest Hemingway. Florida as an exotic destination and the gateway to the even more exotic Cuba. It's both a period piece and a set of recipes that we can recreate today in imitation of 1935 Florida. Tropical drinks from a stylish age. I especially like its version of the Mojito in its popular phase the first time around.Get more detail about Bar La Florida Cocktails 1935 Reprint.

Cheap The Accidental Connoisseur: An Irreverent Journey Through the Wine World
I found myself truly enthusiastic about this book from the first chapter. I liked the writing, it was funny, sardonic, tongue-in-cheek, not typical in the world of wine writing. The memoir at the beginning...describing the Beaujolais he believed he was quaffing as our Lord's hemoglobin as a Catholic school boy... I thought it was going be unique...the humor, the "irreverent" tone.
This is a "not bad" book but not truly "irreverent". Despite his attempts at trying to downplay meeting Robert Mondavi and Piero Antinori, getting together with rustic winemakers in Italy and California, it doesn't really work. There are moments of humility here, modesty but not many. After awhile I couldn't relate to Osborne's observations, describing cuisine I've never heard of or tasted. The narrative structure also tires - Osborne goes from winery/winemaker to winery/winemaker describing the buildings, the people, the atmosphere with little real enthusiasm, following through with formulaic efforts, each chapter a variation of the previous.
All in all, the book feels spoiled (should I say "corked"?). After the first few chapters, I started to see the pattern. There is reverence here. It's the ideal "wine snob" book. The title is aimed at everyday people, people not into the "hoopla" of wine. There's hoopla here, just hidden. Osborn really isn't much of an accidental connoisseur, just a journalist who name drops and mopes about criticizing the way wine has changed in the world.
If you're someone just looking to learn about wine, its pleasures and pursuits, check out Natalie Maclean's "Red White and Drunk All Over" If you want something more with a bit more enthusiasm, "Wine: A Life Uncorked" by Hugh Johnson. Johnson writes brilliantly, he is an aristocrat but it feels like he truly appreciates the life he has had and the experience of wine. Get Osborne's book from the library if you're truly curious. Maclean and Johnson's books are treasures.Get more detail about The Accidental Connoisseur: An Irreverent Journey Through the Wine World.

Buying 101 Recipes for Making Wild Wines at Home: A Step-by-Step Guide to Using Herbs, Fruits, and Flowers (Back to Basics Cooking)
This book is an easy read that starts with a simplistic and brief description of the equipment required and the history of winemaking. This is a great book for beginner wine-makers and those who know quite a bit. It gives basic, but helpful information on each important ingredient for the wine-making process. I would recommend this book to those who want to begin making wine, and those who think they know something about the process but would like to gain a little more knowledge, and some important tips (i.e. how to remove labels from used wine bottles).
I was able to try a couple of the wine recipes, and the directions were extremely simple to follow even down to what should be done each day after the initial instructions. I am currently waiting on them to mature, but hopefully they will be fit for the next occasion my family has planned.Get more detail about 101 Recipes for Making Wild Wines at Home: A Step-by-Step Guide to Using Herbs, Fruits, and Flowers (Back to Basics Cooking).

Purchase Washington Wines and Wineries: The Essential Guide
Washington's wine industry competes with California's Napa Valley in much the same way that Microsoft and the companies that it spawned compete with California's Silicon Valley. Paul Greggut writes a very informative book describing the state's wines and wineries. This could have been a five star, but the book is in textbook form. Since more then likely, it is being read by a casual wine sipper, it could have been written in a more entertaining form. Maybe Greggut could have done a little more to engage the reader and show the fun of visiting wineries across the state. Get more detail about Washington Wines and Wineries: The Essential Guide.

Order Questions of Taste: The Philosophy of Wine
I wouldn't recommend this book unless you are either philosophically minded (i.e. have a background in philosophy) or enjoy scholarly essays. This book is not an introduction to wine, it is not about families in vineyards, about wine lovers and wine-makers sharing their personal tales about wine and the wine experience (although Chapter 10 does focus on Ridge winemaker, Paul Draper and his opinions about wine and wine culture - if you can pick this book up at the library, just read his interview with wine writer Andrew Jefford. It is the most accessible part of the book, revealing the depth and passion of a widely-read, world traveled California winemaker).
If you took a philosophy class in university and didn't enjoy it, I suggest something else. This book is dry, reminiscent of philosophical journals I had to read as an undergraduate. As much as I loved this book, treasured each individual essay, I know it isn't for everyone. The book doesn't focus on grape varieties, doesn't talk about the history of wine, etc...
But again, I loved it. Ten essays, all of them focusing on the philosophical questions circulating around wine appreciation and apprehension. There is discussion about the science of wine, the science of the brain, subjectivity vs. objectivity. If this gets you going, I recommend this book. I found the reading fascinating but slow going, often pausing, putting the book aside over some of the more difficult to grasp concepts. Each essay is worth several reads, if not to enjoy the prose and the arguments but to further dwell on the questions presented. The one question I still come back to: is wine art? Roger Scruton would argue against it as would Tim Crane in this volume. It is a question I often put to my colleagues in the wine industry and the discussion always comes up with something new.
Again, this is a great read, one of my favourites in the literature of wine (The Judgment of Paris by George Taber another) but not for everybody. If you want the challenge and are prepared for it, I say go for it. Others interested in philosophy of wine, check out 'Wine & Philosophy' edited Frit Allhoff... both are great but the latter is suitable for a larger audience.
